Ozone applied in right amounts can help the environment

In our daily lives we frequently use chemical products like drugs, detergents, pesticides and numerous other compounds which are added to effluent after use and are transported to the treatment plants. In common treatment plants many of these substances can successfully be extracted from the water, whereas other compounds are only removed inadequately. These residues then get into surface waters and are eventually found in drinking water as so called “organic trace compounds”. To prevent these compounds from reaching drinking water, treatment plant plants can add an additional treatment stage like for example activated carbon or ozone. In contrast to water treatment with activated carbon, ozone requires a sophisticated measurement and control technology (MSR).
This issue is addressed with the project “Fast and reliable measurement and control technology concepts for Tertiary wastewater treatment with ozone (MeReZone)”, which started on August 1 2017. By implementing our online measuring probes (spectral photometers) in combination with an innovative control concept, the determination of an appropriate amount of ozone will be optimized. As a result, the treatment and purifications aims regarding the organic compounds should be met even with constantly changing effluent compositions and unnecessary power consumption through overdosage should be avoided – both contributing to a healthy environment.
The trial of the MSR-Concept takes place at a pilot installation of the project partner “Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin” at a sewage treatment plant of the “Berliner Wasserbetriebe”.
The collaborative research project “Fast and reliable measurement and control technology concepts for Tertiary wastewater treatment with ozone (MeReZone)” is funded by the The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the KMU-Innovative program.
